10-25-07 You can see the total demise of the F-1 furnace in this picture. The lid and base survived, and seem a lot sturdier than the walls were. I suspect the perlite burned out of the walls, causing the walls to become brittle. The material almost crumbles in my hand if i squeeze it, and a small shock will cause even a thick unbroken piece to crack.

10-25-07 Another picture of the furnace after it achieved end-of-life. YOu can see the murder weapon laying by the furnace lid. The burner clearly worked pretty well to melt the furnace so effectively.
